Jones Memorial Park and Golf Course
Now Open, Jones Park Golf Course opened for play in 1959 as a 9-hole facility set on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids. This course is close to the interstate and convenient to reach. The 9-hole facility continued until the spring of 2000, when the course was closed for the Master Plan Renovation. Lohmann Golf Design and The Bruce Company turned the course into an 18-hole course with 20 sand bunkers and 11 ponds. The 18-hole course was officially opened to the public May 24, 2001. Jones Memorial Park in southwest Cedar Rapids was named after Richard C. Jones, a former Parks Commissioner. The course was severely damaged during flood of 2008.
Ellis Park and Golf Course
Ellis Golf Course's first 9-hole course was opened for play in the early twenties with the back nine added in 1948-49. The course is close to being one of the oldest and most challenging courses in the state. The front nine features holes with large elevated greens. The back nine is fully wooded with tight undulating holes that are quite scenic. The layout will demand every club in your bag and is a real pleasure to play. In 2001, after a donation from an anonymous golfer, a wood sculpture of Payne Stewart was completed. The Master Plan Renovation began in spring 2002 at Ellis Park Golf Course by The Bruce Company of Wisconsin Incorporated from Middleton, Wisconsin.
Twins Pines Golf Course
On July 4, 1962, the first round was played on Twin Pines Golf Course as an 18-hole facility. The wide fairways and lush greens have made this one of Iowa's most popular golf course. The course is enjoyed by people of every age and ability. Twin Pines is easy to walk, though a full fleet of carts are available. Twin Pines Golf Course has been a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since January 18, 2002.
Donald K. Gardner Golf Course
Squaw Creek Golf Course was started in early 1966 and scheduled to open the spring of 1968. This 18-hole championship course offers golfers a wide variety of holes. This course is very challenging for the advanced player offering length, hazards, and trees. Yet, it is still very enjoyable to play for those of average ability. The location, just outside of Marion and next to Squaw Creek Park provides the course with a beautiful setting. On September 8, 1999, the City Council of the City of Cedar Rapids renamed Squaw Creek Golf Course to the Donald K. Gardner Golf Course in memory of the former Parks and Public Property Commissioner. Donald K. Gardner served the Cedar Rapids Parks Department from 1944 to 1969 and was appointed to complete the term as Commissioner of Parks and Public Property in 1956 and continued that position for 13 years.
