The United States of America (commonly referred to as the United States, the U.S., the USA, or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states and a federal district. The country is situated mostly in central North America, where its forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with Canada to its east and Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The country also possesses several territories, or insular areas, in the Caribbean and Pacific. At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km²) and with about 306 million people, the United States is the third or fourth largest country by total area, and third largest by land area and by population. The U.S. economy is the largest national economy in the world, with an estimated 2008 gross domestic product (GDP) of US $14.3 trillion (23% of the world total based on nominal GDP and almost 21% at purchasing power parity). In 1507, German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller produced a world map on which he named the lands of the Western Hemisphere "America" after Italian explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. The former British colonies first used the country's modern name in the Declaration of Independence, which was the "unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America" adopted by the "Representatives of the united States of America" on July 4, 1776. The United States of America is located in the middle of the North American continent, with Canada to the north and the United Mexican States to the south. The United States ranges from the Atlantic Ocean on the nation's east coast to the Pacific Ocean bordering the west, and also includes the state of Hawaii, a series of islands located in the Pacific Ocean, the state of Alaska located in the northwestern part of the continent above the Yukon, and numerous other holdings and territories. The first known inhabitants of United States are believed to have arrived over a period of several thousand years beginning approximately 20,000 years ago by crossing the Bering land bridge into Alaska. The first solid evidence of these cultures settling in what would become the US begins as early as 15,000 years ago with the Clovis culture. Little is known of these early settlers compared to the Europeans who colonized the area after the first voyage of navigator Christopher Columbus in 1492 for Spain. Columbus' men were also the first documented Old Worlders to land in the territory of the United States when they arrived in Puerto Rico during their second voyage in 1493. The first European known to set foot in the continental U.S. was Juan Ponce de León, who arrived in Florida in 1513, though there is some evidence suggesting that he may have been preceded by John Cabot in 1497. Exploration by various European countries, Dutch, Spanish, English, French, Swedish, and Portuguese settlements were established. Columbus was the first European to set foot on what would one day become U.S. territory when he came to Puerto Rico in 1493. In the 15th century, Europeans brought horses, cattle, and hogs to the Americas. One theory suggests peoples of the Americas descended from people who probably migrated from Siberia across the Bering Strait, anywhere between 9,000 and 50,000 years ago. These peoples are often referred to as Native Americans, First Nations and by Christopher Columbus' historical mistake Indians, as he believed he had arrived in the East Indies. The early Paleoamericans soon spread throughout the Americas, diversifying into many hundreds of culturally distinct nations and tribes. The waves of migrating peoples with similar languages and perhaps physical characteristics as well, moved into various geographic areas of North, and then Central and South America, it is thought. Some suggest an early Atlantic migration route into the Americas and that stone tool technology of the Solutrean culture in prehistoric Europe may have later influenced the development of the Clovis tool making culture in the Americas. European colonization of the Americas forever changed the lives, bloodlines and cultures of the peoples of the American continent. Some believe that, among the various contributing factors, epidemic disease was the overwhelming cause of the population decline of the American natives. After first contacts with Europeans and Africans, some believe that the death of 90 to 95% of the native population of the New World was caused by Old World diseases. The thirteen Colonies united against the British Empire and entered a period of armed conflict known as the Revolutionary War or the American War of Independence between 1775 and 1783. This culminated in an American Declaration of Independence in 1776 and victory on the battlefield in October 1781. France played a key role in aiding the revolution providing the American patriots with money and munitions and organized a coalition against Britain, then sent a fleet and army that played a decisive role at the battle that effectively ended the war at Yorktown. This revolutionary era began in 1763 with Britain imposing taxes on the thirteen colonies for their defense of the colonies. After protests in Boston over these taxes, Britain sent troops. The Americas mobilized militia and fighting broke out in 1775. In 1776 representatives of the 13 colonies voted unanimously to adopt a Declaration of Independence by which they established the United States of America. The Americans formed an alliance with France in 1778 that evened out the military and naval strengths, two main British armies were captured at Saratoga in 1777 and Yorktown in 1781 leading to peace with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. John Locke's ideas on liberalism greatly influenced the political minds behind the revolution, his theory of the "social contract" implied the natural right of the people to overthrow their leaders, should those leaders betray the historic rights of Englishmen. The or a motivating force behind the revolution was the Americans embracing a political ideology called "republicanism". The Proclamation of 1763 restricted American movement across the Appalachian Mountains which helped ignite the revolution. The phrase "No taxation without representation" became popular in many American circles, due to Britain levying taxes. In 1765 the Stamp Act was the first direct tax ever levied by Parliament on the colonies. In 1773 the event known as the "Boston Tea Party" occured, in which men led by Samuel Adams dumped tea in the Boston harbor. The Battle of Lexington and Concord took place April 19, 1775 when the British sent a regiment to confiscate arms and arrest revolutionaries in Concord. It was the first fighting of the American Revolutionary War. The revolutionaries were called at the time 'Patriots', 'Whigs', 'Congress-men', or 'Americans'. On January 10, 1776 Thomas Paine published a political pamphlet entitled Common Sense arguing that the only solution to the problems with Britain was republicanism and independence from Great Britain. Many believe the American Revolution was a unique and radical event that produced deep changes which had a profound impact on world affairs, based on an increasing belief in the principles of republicanism, such as peoples' natural rights, and a system of laws chosen by the people.
